So, we are currently living in Australia at the moment, and whilst I love the idea of living in harmony with the nature of the outback, I am definitely not loving the 6-foot brown snake we found in the backyard this summer! I am so grateful that nobody was hurt and we were able to call the pest control to come and collect it safely, but it has inspired me to do a little research on how I can do some modifications within our backyard to avoid having spaces that a snake could hide, and also to find out what options are available to deter snakes from entering naturally.
Understanding Snakes:
Snakes in Australia: Australia is home to various snake species, including venomous ones like the Eastern Brown Snake and the Red-bellied Black Snake. Understanding their behavior, habitat preferences, and typical entry points into yards is crucial for effective snake management.

How to Create an Anti-Snake Atmosphere:
- Remove Hiding Places: Keep your yard tidy by removing clutter, tall grass, and piles of debris where snakes can hide.
- Secure Entry Points: Seal gaps and cracks in walls, fences, and around utility pipes to prevent snakes from entering your yard.
- Reduce Rodent Population: Snakes are attracted to areas abundant in prey. Implement rodent control measures to deter snakes from lingering in your yard.
- Plant Selection: Choose plants with strong scents or textures that snakes find unpleasant. The below list are some suggestions which I found whilst researching.
Lavender (Lavandula angustifolia): Known for its delightful fragrance and vibrant purple blooms, lavender is a versatile plant that serves multiple purposes in the garden. Apart from its aesthetic appeal and its utility in aromatherapy, lavender is also an excellent natural snake repellent. Snakes are sensitive to strong odors, and the potent scent of lavender essential oil is particularly effective in deterring them. Planting lavender around the perimeter of your yard or near entry points to your home can help keep snakes at bay.

2. Marigold (Tagetes spp.): Bright and cheerful, marigolds are a popular choice for gardeners looking to add a splash of color to their outdoor spaces. What many may not know is that marigolds possess natural insect-repelling properties, which can indirectly deter snakes. By keeping insect populations in check, marigolds help disrupt the food chain, making your yard less appealing to snakes. Additionally, the strong aroma of marigold foliage acts as a deterrent to snakes, discouraging them from venturing into your garden.

3. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue (Sansevieria trifasciata): Also known as snake plant, Mother-in-Law’s Tongue is aptly named for its sharp, pointed leaves that resemble the tongue of a snake. Beyond its striking appearance, this hardy succulent is an excellent choice for snake-proofing your yard. Mother-in-Law’s Tongue emits oxygen at night, making it an ideal indoor plant, but its presence outdoors can also help repel snakes. Its thick, waxy leaves contain a bitter-tasting sap that snakes find unpalatable, deterring them from slithering into your garden.

4. Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis): A staple in culinary gardens, rosemary is prized for its fragrant foliage and flavorful leaves that enhance a variety of dishes. However, its benefits extend beyond the kitchen, as rosemary also possesses natural pest-repelling properties. Like lavender, rosemary emits a strong aroma that snakes find offensive, making it an effective deterrent when planted strategically around your yard. Consider incorporating rosemary into your landscaping to not only ward off snakes but also to enjoy its culinary and aromatic benefits.

5. Australian Tea Tree (Melaleuca alternifolia): Native to Australia, the tea tree is renowned for its medicinal properties and is commonly used in skincare products and aromatherapy. In addition to its therapeutic benefits, the strong scent of tea tree oil is highly effective in repelling snakes. Planting Australian tea trees around your yard creates a natural barrier that snakes are reluctant to cross. Not only does this help keep snakes away, but it also adds a touch of native Australian flora to your garden.

What Are the Things That Keep Snakes Away?:
- Strong Odors: Snakes have a keen sense of smell and are deterred by strong scents such as those emitted by certain plants, citrus peels, or ammonia-based products.
- Vibrations: Install vibrating snake repellents or utilize vibrating tools when working in the yard to create disturbances that deter snakes.
Alternative Snake Repellents:
- Electronic Devices: Ultrasonic or vibration-based devices emit frequencies that disrupt snake communication and navigation, encouraging them to avoid the area.
- Natural Predators: Introduce natural snake predators like certain bird species or domestic animals (e.g., cats) into your yard to help control snake populations.
To-Dos to Keep Snakes Out of Your Yard:
- Regular Yard Maintenance: Keep grass trimmed, remove debris, and inspect your yard regularly for signs of snake activity.
- Educate Family Members: Teach children and other household members about snake safety, including what to do in the event of an encounter.
Professional Control and Removal:
- Consultation: If you’re dealing with persistent snake issues or encounter venomous species, seek assistance from professional pest control services specializing in snake removal.
- Habitat Modification: Professionals can assess your property and recommend habitat modifications to make it less attractive to snakes.
By understanding snakes’ behavior and preferences, implementing preventative measures, and utilizing natural and alternative repellents, you can effectively safeguard your Australian yard against snake intrusions. However, in cases of persistent infestations or encounters with venomous species, don’t hesitate to seek the expertise of professional control and removal services for prompt and safe resolution. With vigilance and proactive measures, you can create a snake-free environment where you and your family can enjoy the outdoors with peace of mind.
