Project Description

Adar Poonawalla Clean City is an environmentally sustainable initiative, undertaken by Serum Institute of India to make Urban India cleaner, greener and healthier.

The APCCI will focus on supporting the Pune Municipal Corporation with collection of street waste. Initiatives undertaken in this direction include:

    • Litter picking from footpaths.

    • Clearing of chronic waste dumping spots across the city.

    • Installing litter bins at strategic / high traffic locations across the city.

APCC Partners with PMC

The APCCI will focus on supporting PMC with infrastructure and management of solid waste, especially focusing on organic waste management. Initiatives undertaken in this direction will include:

    • Provision of litter bins at strategic/high traffic locations across the city

    • Support vehicles and human resources for clearance of garbage from litter bins

    • Information and outreach programs to educate citizens on the importance of segregation of waste

Activation programs in association with PMC at schools, residential societies, marketplaces, etc Roadside litter picking disposable cups, wrappers, sachets, empty bottles, etc. are picked using state-of-the-art walk-along litter picking. Every day 8 km of roads are covered by each machine. 110 such machines are deployed in the city presently.

After studying the pattern of street-side waste and waste disposal habits of
citizens, APCCI has ergonomically designed litter bins to serve
pedestrians. These are compartmentalized litter bins with 60
liters capacity of each Wet and Dry waste with pictorial representation and
instructions to ensure proper use of the bins. These bins are provided with
area-wise code numbers so that they can be monitored. These litter bins are
cleaned everyday by APCCI waste warriors.

While awareness about cleanliness and hygiene is important, many places in the city see waste being thrown in corners or open plots due to the absence of door-to-door collection. APCCI has surveyed all these chronic spots, and these spots are monitored every day and cleaned as per a pre-decided schedule. This mostly involves all types of household waste including dry and wet waste. APCCI has coordinated with Urban Local Bodies (ULB’s ) to segregate waste at such spots so that dry waste can be suctioned by machines and disposed-off to ULBs recycling facilities.

APCCI cleans the roads of the city with truck mounted state-of-the-art mechanical road sweeper. The sweeper conforms to global standards of emission i.e. PM10 standards. APCCI sweeps approximately 100 Km of roads per day of different stretches in the city via a route map thereby cleaning over 600 Km of roads in week

Mr Adar Poonawala, CEO - Serum Institute, pledged Rs.100 crores to pick up and manage waste and garbage in the city of Pune., India. Today there are over 250 trucks/ machines and close to 600 volunteers who manage this activity covering more than 600 kms of roads in Pune (roughly 60% the city) and in part of Mumbai.

The clean city initiative deploys state of the art machines using GPS enabled vehicles and mobile applications for reporting the waste by citizens.

Equipment deployed includes, Electric Vacuum Street Litter Picker, Electric Auto Tipper, Vacuum Litter Picker Mounted on Vehicles, Vacuum Assisted Truck Mounted Road Sweeper, Auto Tippers which uses the best technology to pick up and clear the waste from the streets. The initiative has gained success with the cooperation of citizens, resident welfare associations, NGOs, and civic officials.

Building Awareness

They also create awareness programs in schools, colleges and the general public on the importance of segregation of waste, we also conduct cleanliness drives at public places including lakes, riverbeds etc.

Water ATMs

APCCI has installed a decentralized state-of-the-art drinking water plant, where needy citizens can draw water from an ATM with smart cards. More than 6000 families are accessing safe drinking water.

This initiative in Pune and Mumbai, India will hopefully inspire other urban cities to
take help from the local civic bodies to create better waste management systems
and build a citizen-friendly city.
